My current location of Houghton, Michigan recently received word of a fantastic accomplishment: the City was designated as a silver-level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists!
This award was a true community effort, led by the Houghton Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Board and supported by Michigan Tech University, the Western UP Health Department, and Bike Initiative Keweenaw (BIKE!). The upgrade from Bronze to Silver was due to a number of factors: steady infrastructure and programming improvements, an increased focus on data collection, more cycling encouragement activities, and consistent support from the local government. These activities were all part of a comprehensive non-motorized plan, first written in 2007 and updated by myself in 2013. You can learn more about Houghton’s active transportation successes at the City Biking & Walking website.
